Anyone need a ticket to the Cal-Maryland game?
So I can't go to the Cal football game anymore tomorrow but I already bought a ticket. If anyone has decided last minute that they actually want to go but don't have a ticket let me know I would be very happy to sell you mine! I really wish I could go because I know it'll be an absolute blast but unfortunately I can't.

Whatever Happened to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits?
There's plenty of reasons to believe that white women make up the most important demographic in this election. Obama practically has over 90% support of African Americans - male and female; McCain has locked in the white male vote, though fortunately not to the same extent; and notwithstanding any big shake-up, Obama will get most of the Latino vote - at least in the important battleground states.
However, since September 3rd, John McCain has seen a sudden surge in his numbers in national polls (what can you say, he's a surge-lovin' kinda guy). Whereas before the Republican National Convention Obama had a consistent 2 to 3 percent lead over McCain, since the announcement of Sarah Palin as his running mate, McCain has usurped Obama's consistent lead. Why? Look to white women. Before the convention shenanigans, Obama led McCain among white women by 8%. Ever since hockey moms have been swept off their feet by Palin Power like a merman who just saved their life (come on, people, don't you watch Family Guy?), McCain is up among the same demographic group by 12%. Now, I'm no mathematician, but that's a 20% shift overnight. Now, take into account that 56 million women will be voting this November, and looks like the numbers add up.
If we get that far - that white women will make the difference in this election - then Hillary's Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits needs to roll up their (suit-pants) sleeves and hit the road - FAST! After all, they're willing to do whatever it takes to keep McCain from the White House.
But wait, don't get too excited. Despite saying she's willing to do anything to get Obama elected just a couple of weeks ago in Denver, Mrs. Clinton has made it clear she will not go on the record attacking Sarah Palin. Instead, she will stick to talking up Obama's record and making a case to people across the country why McCain cannot take over the White House in 09. Yes, because that is exactly what she did during the convention, right? Think again. Not one time in her speech did she mention that Obama was ready to be the Commander-in-Chief.
The fact is, Hillary's ego has once again resulted in her putting her own ambitions and her own interests ahead of the party, ahead of the 18 million people who voted for her, and ahead of the country.
It's clear that Obama and Joe Biden can't attack Palin. As soon as Biden had the audacity to tell the people what they need to hear - that putting Palin in the White House is a backward step for women - the McCain camp and the GOP will play the sexist card. And I will argue that the democratic strategy to just ignore Palin and somehow hope that the buzz surrounding the ex-Wasilla mayor will die in the next 2 months will indeed result in a Republican White House. Obama's been on the national stage for nineteen months and people are still not tired of him - at least not yet.
No. What does a chihuahua do when a pitbull bites it? It bites back. And it bites hard (I'm not sure if this even works, but I think chihuahuas are cool). Hillary Clinton needs to tame her off-the-charts ego and remind women that the reason they supported her wasn't because she has a vagina (we won't get into a debate about whether this is true or not), but because of who she was and what she stood for. The Hill-pack's values run diametrically opposed to Sarah Palin. They are pro-choice, pro-gun control, and pro-stem-cell.
But of course Hillary can't do it alone. She needs other women like Kathleen Sebelius, Janet Napolitano, and Claire McCaskill - her own Lena, Carmen, and Tibby (no, I did not know them - thanks Wikipedia).

FREE and EXCITING things in DC!!!!
So I am on a constant search for things in DC that are FREE (especially events and FOOD). I came accross this link today and although it's dated (2004, yikes!) it is easy to navigate and you can click on the links to see if the restaurants/museums/etc. still offer what was listed.

here are a few that I checked up on myself and seem interesting enough to post:
1. $5 "bar bites" from Morton's steakhouse in Georgetown. The deal runs from M-F 5pm-6:30pm AND 9:30pm-11pm. Things like mini filet hamburgers (plate of 4)
2. The Mexican Cultural Institute (which they described as a mansion turned gallery which sounds awesome) is having an oppening TONIGHT of works by Ricardo Mazal from 6:30pm- 8:30pm. Although the exhibit is running until October, openings usually mean free booze and food (or at least in LA they do). Consider it a pre-party. google for address.
3. Again with the anticipated free booze and food events: Dupont Circle Galleries has open house on the first Friday of every month from 6pm-9pm. I don't know if these are actual opening receptions, but it's down the street so you aren't investing much if you are just going for the freebies and it turns out to be a bust.
4. Guaranteed food!!!! The third Friday of every month the Galleries 1054 in Georgetown's canal square holds an open house from 6pm-8pm that is CATERED by Sea Catch Restaurant.
5. FREE COFFEE & DESSERTS!!! The third Tuesdy of the month there is a Poetry Coffee night with local poetys, free starbucks, and desserts. Starts @ 7:30pm and is located at the Grace Church in Georgetown.>>> What would be really cool is if some of you had hidden poetic talents that you could perform here.
I'll keep you all in the loop when I find more free things

-Remember: Farmer's market is this weekend and buying local helps the community and is probably better for you.

September is Hunger Action Month
Yes, I realize that this post has zero content involving alcohol...I hope you will forgive me.
I wanted to let everyone know that September is Hunger Action Month and I would like to organize some volunteer opportunities in regards to it.
Here are some basic ideas:
1. pack a brown bag lunch and take a stroll through DC donating the lunches to the homeless that are in our own neighborhood.
2. sign up with an organization (for example, SOME- so others might eat) and work in a kitchen serving breakfast or lunch
3. work with an organization on sorting and packing food that is distributed to low income families
Obviously there are a load of other things that we could do. Let me know if you are interested so I can start putting more action toward this: arosado2@ucmerced.edu

Cal @ Maryland
This September 13th the Golden Bears will be looking to keep their winning season rolling at University of Maryland (Roll On You BEARS). Angelo, Misha, and I are thinking about going to support Riley and the sloth (GO BEARS) in College Park. But it would be cool to get more people together for the trip. I know some people might be thinking about going to Maryland for a weekend trip, anyway. So even if you're not big into football, this would be the perfect opportunity to go to the Old Line State with fellow UCDCers.
We might even plan a few extraneous events down in MD aside from just watching the game. So reply to this if you want to go so we can coordinate transportation, events, and other aspects of the trip. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. We can go with the UC alumni, or go as our own separate group.

UCDC Hott Tamale Train
Hello Beautiful UCDC Fall 2008 People :)
Tonight the UCDC Hott Tamale Train is rolling through the building. Please be in your room after 10pm and a group of people will drop by to say hello, pick you up, and lead you to the last stop...the train will start on the 11th floor and end in room 406...
This is an informal social so feel free to bring snacks or anything else...!
